Qantas makes a surprise comeback at worlds Skytrax Airline Awards
Qantas has climbed the world’s best airline rankings as it works to restore its post COVID reputation. The airline rose to 14th place—its best result since 2022—after falling to 24th last year. However, this is still a far cry from its previous highs; Qantas was ranked in the top five as recently as 2022.
The Skytrax World Airline Awards, often called “the Oscars of the aviation industry,”
are based on surveys from more than 22 million passengers across over 325
airlines. Qatar Airways took out the top spot for the second year in a row, which is good news for its partner, Virgin Australia. Singapore Airlines came in second, followed by Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and All Nippon Airways. Virgin Australia also had a better showing this year, moving up from 43rd to 34th place. Jetstar didn’t fare so well, dropping from 75th to 88th in the top 100.
After the tragic Air India crash on June 12 in Ahmedabad—with just one
survivor—airline safety is back in the spotlight. In another world airline award Qantas has been named the world’s safest airline for 2025 by 42kft.com, a site that ranks airlines based on safety, environmental impact, and onboard products. Qatar Airways came in second, followed by Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, and Emirates. Virgin Australia landed in sixth place, while Jetstar was named the second-safest low-cost airline.
Aviation site AirlineRatings.com also released its own 2025 safety rankings, based
on crash history, serious incidents, and other safety factors. Qantas came in second
on that list, just behind Air New Zealand. Virgin Australia was again sixth, and Jetstar
was voted the second-safest budget airline.
The recent Iran-US conflict has caused major disruptions for Qantas, especially on its long flights between Australia and Europe. Some flights had to be rerouted or turned around because of safety concerns, with Qatari airspace temporarily closed and Iranian airspace being avoided. This has made routes more crowded and flights longer.
