Qantas’s Sydney to Melbourne route is the second highest revenue route in the world beaten only by British Airways flights between London and New York.

According to analysis by flight schedule experts OAG, the Qantas route rakes in a whopping $1.16 billion during a year or $33,000 an hour.

It’s the influence of volume and variety which makes Qantas’ Sydney to Melbourne route so profitable. Qantas combines large aircraft (Boeing 737-800 aircraft) with high volume operating about 65 flights per day. Reduced variety also helps Qantas standardise and reduce complexity and operating costs. Also, there is a high proportion of business customers who typically book later and pay more for their flights.
